Sunday, October 19, 2003  Summer Mission 2 e-Newsletter  [Home][Main][Newsletters] [Missions]

Dear Friends,
About three weeks ago, we gave you a synopsis of our Summer Mission No. 2 effort and promised to bring you more details shortly. What follows fulfils that promise. As an electronic newsletter, we just provide a brief on each item with a link to our web site where you'll find full stories, photo albums, and even video clips of the trip. At the Uzi well, I sing with crew - "Living Water Living Water, I will never thirst again!"

We wish to express thanks to you and many of our friends, donors  and key sponsor partners like Living Water International, Inc. and Medical Missions International for their significant contributions which helped to make this trip and mission effort a success. We'll bring you more about these linkages that the Lord is bringing together for us as we truly leverage mutually beneficial networking in ministry which breaks beyond denominational or church boundaries to get us going with the Great Commission.

Enjoy the edition, and please share by forwarding to others and encourage them to get involved with us by contributing, volunteering, networking resources and praying for this work and ministry. (He might have need of your donkey, or supper room just for a season).

Ogberuru is one of hardest hit villages in terms of water shortages and distance to any surface water for the community. Here, it is common for children and women to walk 3-4 miles to find reasonable water. The photo on our Home page tells the story ... (see the girl washing 'Ukwa' bean food with dirty pond water by the road side during the rainy season). To access the complete article on page 1 of the Newsletter go here).

At Uzi Owerri, we did the second water well project for the Anglican Communion. The well will serve their vocational center, the medical clinic, a Printing & Publishing center, and a primary school with nearly 2000 students.  This well was done in 2 days demonstrating how well the LS-200 can meet the drilling challenge in a good formation and to what extent the new trainees have acquired the skills.

Water at last - the UZI, Owerri well, August 2002. Allan Fulton (APF Ministries Ghana / Living Water International) Missionary associate, and Dr. A. Sunny Okorie celebrate our success with other drill team crew in the background excitedly splashing the clean water gushing from about 200 feet below the earth surface.

Three Medical outreach projects were conducted with help of local ministers to mobilize the people and keep some order in the rather busy halls / rooms used to consult and treat patients. Each patient seen was tested for blood pressure, especially adults, given free medicines, vitamins, and in some cases were also ministered to spiritually. Many were randomly selected for Diabetes screening with the team doing about 350 blood sugar tests. (July 26 through August 8, 2002) :

Dr. Kathryn Garrison confers with MMI Medical lead, Dr. Stuart Quartemont at the outreach in Ogberuru as they deal with numerous outpatient cases in the Civic / Youth Center.

  1. Ogberuru - this was our first rural outreach to the Ogberuru community of over 12,000 village dwellers. Our second day to this outreach location was very eventful - deadlocked road due to rain and erosion. Over 350 people were reached - seen by nurses, or medical assistants and doctors before receiving free medications.

  2. Nkwesi is a densely populated village community of over 15,000. The outreach in this lush Uguta Lake area was another challenge to the team as the road to the place was virtually washed out by erosion and lack of maintenance, but getting there to meet very enthusiastic recipients was very pleasant to the medical team. We reached out to over 300 people who were seen by doctors and nurses, and got free medications for typical tropical diseases and other injuries.

  3. Uzi outreach - at Uzi, within Owerri urban area, we helped about 170 needy people that were examined and treated medically.

V-TEN (Vocational Technical Educational Network) skills training in Computer and Internet Fundamentals was conducted for 3 days. 23 were trained on basic computer utilization / applications skills - viz, how to use the computers to do Word Processing, including computer operations & DTP training for Diocesan Press of the Owerri Dioceses. On using Excel for Accounting we trained 14 workers at the Bishop's Borne Computer Center to support their businesses. <Go here for more...>

We took a box of gift items for the needy donated by the good folks at All Nations Church in League City. Relief Network Ministries furnished several computers, software titles, and skills acquisition books to 3 other non-profit organizations while in Nigeria to enable them carry on the banner of touching lives with a holistic gospel. <Go here for further details>
