Date Done: July 2, 2003
1. Name of Project: NKWESI (Project # 03/2002)
2. Location: NKWESI is about 30 miles Southwest of Owerri, the Imo State capital in Nigeria. It is within 10 miles East of the Oguta Lake. GPS coordinates: (Misplaced – will be furnished later). The well is located in front of St. Martias Anglican Church (a good landmark), and also opposite the primary school.
3. Estimate of Population served or to be served by well (human, and animals / livestock): The well will serve about 4000+ of the nearly 10000 people in the larger NKWESI community as well as nearly 2500 of their livestock. About 65% are children.
4. Distance to nearest river or stream: Less than 1 Kilometer or approximately half a mile.
5. Description of project / challenges faced if any (include the general formation information / soil types encountered): The major challenge was inexperience with mud drilling and the loss of the 2 most experienced drill operators on the team. In all, 4 wells were drilled with one well finally producing the right amount of water. The team had stuck pipes in first hole but managed to pull it out; access to drilling mud / water was an issue. The road to NKWESI was equally bad, but motorable. The drilling effort took about 2.5 weeks, and an extra 2 days to develop and install pump. Soil is sand / clay.
6. Physical Dimensions of well – (Depth of Water well, finish diameter, etc.): Well is 7.5” diameter and was drilled to 180 feet.
7. Installations / Yield: State the casing size installed, draw pipes / riser pipes installed, capacity of pump installed and type (submersible or hand pump, power source where a submersible is installed, etc.): 5.5” Casing was installed in well, with a 2 HP submersible pump. The draw pipes or riser pipes was 1.5” pipes. The well yields clear clean, odorless, tasteless water at over 30 GPM.
8. Vital Photographs: The photographs are included in the Mission #3 photo gallery, which also has a photo of the pre-lunch during the Bishop’s visit to the community where a jubilant crowd of women & children gathered praising God.
9. What the beneficiaries are saying: include a paragraph or two to describe any gratitude expressed: “Well done…Thank you so much”; “May God reward you this kindness to our people”; “we shall not have to drink from the river again!,” etc.
10. General Comments: (any other thoughts you have on the project / its development and commissioning): NKWESI was the first team’s attempt to prove it could do a well by itself with out an instructor, but they miss Allen Fulton & Harry Westmoreland’s guidance on the LS-200 rig. The mud pump got damaged – perhaps due to inappropriate care / lack of proper engine inspection. Mud circulation problems encountered were harder to handle. In the second hole, it appeared they hit an underground craves that kept sucking up water with no return. The team needs more training! The well is co-sponsored by our partners - Living Water International and the Bishop's Foundation for Mission & Development in Nigeria.
Blessings to you as you share in our ministry and share this website with
