1. Name of Project: IKWUANO 1, Umuahia – Abia State (Project # 06/2003)
2. Location: GPS coordinates: 5:27:91N 7:32:71E or (05 deg. 27.912N and 007 deg. 32.707E), Elev. 143m. Water well is in Ikwuano – off Uzuakoli, Old Umuahia Road near Umuahia, the capital of Abia State – Nigeria.
3. Estimate of Population served or to be served by well (human, and animals / livestock): About 5000 people in the community, and includes initial access to clean water for the proposed maternity clinic for the community.
4. Distance to nearest river or stream: 4.5 Kilometers or approximately about 3 miles.
5. Description of project / challenges faced if any (include the gen. formation information / soil types encountered): Two wells were drilled in mixed formation predominately clay. The first well had bad underground holes and loss of drilling mud causing drilling to be discontinued at about 160 feet.
6. Physical Dimensions of Well - Depth of Water Well, finish diameter, etc.): The second well drilled a few yards (about 200 yards) / some meters away was 6” in diameter and well finished at 290 feet.
7. Installations: State the casing size installed, draw pipes / riser pipes installed, capacity of pump installed and type (submersible or hand pump, power source where a submersible is installed, etc.): 5.5” Casing was installed in well, with a 2 HP GRUNDFO submersible pump. The draw pipes or riser was 1.5” pipes. Also a 20 ft tower / 3000 gal overhead tank system is being erected at the cost of $2500.
8. Vital Photographs: Include photos of water well producing / being developed, or natives fetching water from well: The photographs are attached – shows well being drilled, villagers rushing to fetch water during testing of finished well.
9. What the beneficiaries are saying: include a paragraph or two to describe any gratitude expressed: “Well done - Thank you so much”; “nobody in Ikwuano needs to travel 3 miles for water”, etc.
10. General Comments: (any other thoughts you have on the project / it's development and commissioning): We praise God for the determination to solve the water problem at IKWUANO. The Otuwa family has helped to sponsor the overhead tank / structural erection to support the water distribution in this large community. Well is being dedicated in honor of late David Otuwa (twin brother of Dr. Samson Otuwa of Relief Network Ministries, Inc.). We are also grateful for the leadership and the on-going financial and technical support of Living Water International in our water well development projects in Nigeria.
