ALULU Water well Project Report – Nigeria

Date Done: July 2, 2003

1. Name of Project: ALULU – UMUEZUMEZU; (Project # 02/2003)

2. Location: UMUEZUMEZU; GPS coordinates: N005o 13.107’ E007o 13.953’ with elevation of 202 feet above sea level. ALULU is about 12 miles South of Okpuala off the Aba-Owerri Road from the Okpula junction in Imo State, but near the boarders of Abia and River States of Nigeria.

3. Estimate of Population served or to be served by well (human, and animals / livestock): The well has capacity to serve about 5000 people in the greater ALULU community as well as nearly 1000 livestock, but a conservative figure is between 2,500 and 3,000 people.

4. Distance to nearest river or stream: 3 Kilometers or approximately 1.5 miles. The stream is  called Umunjilaka.

5. Description of project / challenges faced if any (includes the general formation information / soil types encountered): The major challenge was access to the place. The road was very bad and virtually non-existent in some places. The delivery of equipment and supplies was challenging, but the drilling process was fairly easy. The well was drilled in one day, but was a long day. It was also cased the same day. The development and test pumping was done 2 days later with a 1000 liter holding tank installed as well as a 5 KVA generating set and a control unit. Soil is sandy / soft clay.

6. Physical Dimensions of well (depth of water well, finish diameter, etc.): Well is 6” diameter and drilled to 182 feet.

7. Installations/ Yield: A 5.5” Casing was installed in well, with a 1.5 HP submersible pump. The draw pipes or riser pipes was 1.5” pipes. The well produces fresh clean odorless, tasteless water at better than 15GPM.

8. Vital Photographs: The photographs are included in the Mission #3 photo gallery, plus a video clip (for best result, use high speed Internet connection, or replay after downloading) of the commissioning / dedication ceremony where about 25 adults, plus numerous children were also led to Christ.

9. What the beneficiaries are saying: include a paragraph or two to describe any gratitude expressed: “Thank you so much”; “May God bless you for coming to give us a well”; “we no longer have to walk miles daily to bring water home before we can cook”, etc.

10. General Comments: (any other thoughts you have on the project / its development and commissioning): We praise God for the determination to solve the nagging water problem at ALULU and for the financial gift and faith of our friends, Humphrey & Martha Nwaobia of Minneapolis which helped to sponsor the well. Humphrey is originally from this village but became disabled by a stroke in 1987 shortly after he promised the villagers that he would one day help provide them access to clean drinking water.  That dream or goal that lingered for years is now realized. We are pleased to be a part of it and also grateful for the leadership and the on-going financial and technical support of our partners - Living Water International in our strategic goals for water well development projects in Nigeria.

Blessings to you as you share in our ministry and share this website with others!
